Artist’s Retreat & En Suite on Hanover Ave.

A previous homeowner had opened up the bedroom to the trunk room, but left columns which limited the placement of the bed to the inside of the bay window.  A Richmond local artist has had to manage the long term effects of a traumatic brain injury and required a truly dark bedroom. The bed placement made opening and closing the blinds cumbersome, so they were always closed.  At the same time, she is an artist who loves color. We opened up the wall a bit more, moved the entry door further down the hall, and incorporated the existing fireplace into built in bookshelves. As a result we were able to move the bed out of the bay window. We used a color from the painting she owned to create a space that is dark dreamy at night and bright and lively during the day.

Additional space configurations were adjusted within the existing walls to accommodate his and her closet space and a large vanity and shower in the en suite.  The homeowners artwork is featured on the drapery panels. The bathroom finishes are decidedly subdued with layers of lighting to meet the homeowner’s physical needs.
